Post-compulsory education for young people in Ticino
The Department of Education and Culture of the Canton of Ticino has undertaken a longitudinal study which aims to follow a sample of 1500 pupils from the end of compulsory school up to obtaining a certificate at upper secondary level (vocational or school). After examining some specific themes (termination of apprenticeship contracts, transition to secondary/apprenticeship level, class repeatings, drop-outs, changes of field, etc.), it seemed appropriate to conduct a broader survey to describe and analyse the factors influencing the educational curriculum. It was therefore decided to periodically identify, for the population in question, the variables most important for an objective assessment of the individual and contextual factors of success or failure in post-compulsory education. Both "unintentional" circumstances (nationality, residence, gender, social origins, etc.) and intentional circumstances (educational and professional motivations, ways of adapting to school and work, attitudes and values, etc.) were considered.
An interim report was published periodically. The first interim report presents the data from the first survey, which refers to the 1500 pupils who, during the 1991/92 school year, were in their last year of compulsory schooling (IV media). In particular, some of the educational, social and cultural characteristics of young people about to complete compulsory schooling in the canton of Ticino were described. The concluding section of the report recalls the main perspectives and substantive questions to which this research would like to provide useful answers.
Une cohorte de 1500 élèves est suivie pendant 5 ans depuis la fin de l'école obligatoire jusqu'à l'obtention d'un diplôme post-obligatoire (scolaire ou professionnel).
