Abstract
The research will examine the effectiveness of policies and strategies aimed to integrate second generation migrant youth within contemporary European societies. The main part of the research involves an empirical assessment of integration strategies in France, Germany and Great Britain. This will be supplemented by a range of secondary analyses of parallel phenomena in the Netherlands, Sweden, Spain, Finland and Switzerland.

Methods (description)
The research question demands two kinds of empirical analysis: (1) to identify and describe integration strategies we will mostly rely on existing secondary material: literature on the subject and the analysis of documents; in addition, expert interviews shall be conducted with practioners, leading political and administrative actors in the field; (2) to measure the nature and degree of integration of second generation migrant youth we shall use two categories of data: (a) data from field studies in France, Germany and Great Britain, which will be based on matched samples of migrants and non-migrants in the age group of 16-25 years; (b) data of the micro censuses of the Community Labour Force Survey from 1983 to 1996.
